When I first visited this site there was an old derelict cottage standing to the front road edge.

That cottage could not be retained so the front elevation of the new house was designed to reflect the proportions of an old stone cottage. The larger accommodation necessary for modern living hidden is behind and lowered into the slope of the site to reduce its impact behind the cottage element.
